Brushes:
½ or ¾ inch flat wash brush, Size 8 and 2 flat shader, Size 5 round, Size 2 script liner. Size 1/8inch dagger/striper. I use Lowe- Cornell 7550 wash, #7300 flats, 7000 round, 7800 dagger/striper, and Jackie Shaw script liner
Other Supplies:
Sealer, tracing paper, piece of brown paper bag, pettifour sponge, Krylon Matt Spray 1311, cork back ruler. Water base varnish
PREPARATION:
Seal box if you desire (I do not seal my box as I use Americana paints). Paint bottom, of box and top of lid with Blue mist, With a pettifour sponge, paint the side edge of lid with French Mauve. Either lightly sponge French Mocha around the bottom or use DecoArt Americana Control Medium and float a band of French Mocha around the edge of the bottom and the edge of the band around the top. Paint inside of box with French Mauve. Lightly sand with brown paper bag on lid top and lightly spray with Krylon Matt. Trace pattern on with white graphite.
When you trace the pattern do not trace in the complete stroke. Just trace a line down the center of the stroke .Do not trace the pattern for the dots, unless you feel that you cannot get them placed equally, if you must use something for a guide, place just a small white graphite pencil dot. I think you will find it harder to get them evenly spaced using a pattern than if you just eye them. As you get about two inches from the end, check your spacing to see how many dots will go evenly in that space.
Base coat heart with French Mauve, with a dagger or a liner and mark off sections of the heart with French Mocha. If you have a lining ruler, sometimes that helps to keep you lines straight. (Ruler with cork on the bottom to lift it off of the surface so the paint wont spread under the ruler) Float French Mauve down both sides of lines. Line center square in four equal sections going both directions.
Left and right top sections are finished with three white comma strokes (each shorter than the other and ending at the same point) starting towards the center of the heart. There is one French Mocha comma stroke going in the other direction and ending at the same point. With the end of your brush dip into the French Mocha and make dots at the beginning of each white comma stroke. If you dont want your dots to flatten out do not touch your brush end to the box. If you want them to be the same size dip your brush for each dot. If you want them to graduate, dip your brush and continue all three with the same dip. This will make each one smaller. I do all my brush strokes first and then the dots so I wont get my hand in them before they dry.
The two outside sections are done with dots of white and French Mocha. Arrange them in any way you please, just be sure and have an uneven number, (this is more pleasing to the eye.)
The bottom two sections are finished with one double loaded flat brush stroke, White and French Mocha. I start at the small end and flatten the brush as I get towards the top, of if it is easier for you, you can start at the top and do as you would a flat brush comma stroke. You can use a filbert if you prefer. You will have a more rounded end if you do this. Put the white to the outside edge of the heart. There is one white comma stroke beneath that and a white comma stroke going in the other direction all end at the same point. Put a French Mocha dip dot at that point.
The bottom section is done with one doubleloaded flat brush stroke in the middle and graduated white dip dots on both sides. All go in the same direction. and three dip dots, the same size at the top
The middle section is done with dip dots, alternated in white and French Mocha in each square. Put white, long comma strokes along each section of the outside of the heart.
A row of dip dots in white was put all around the outside edge about ¼ inch apart and a second row of French Mocha dots was put inside every other pair of the white dots. Lettering is done with a number 2 flat brush and French Mocha held at a / angle for wide stroke and on chisel edge for narrow strokes. Put white stroke inside each of the letters on left inside.
I finished the inside of the bottom of the box and the top of the lid with Mauve Soft Flock. Put a note or poem in the box to the parents, if you wish, and sign your name.
I am happy to share this pattern I think you will find it easy and fast to do, if you do line work. It is wonderful to be a part of this program. Direct any questions to bettiejs@websurf.net.
