First of all, let me say how honored I am to be participating in this program, and how good it makes me feel to know that I am helping others, in some small way. I hope that this little angel that I have designed and you will paint, may bring comfort to someone, during what must be a very difficult time. I tried to keep this design fairly simple, but feel free to change the colors, and details to suit your painting style.

Palette: DecoArt Americana Acrylics
|
Brushes: Loew/Cornell Golden Taklon Series7300 Shaders #14,#6 |
Misc. Supplies:
3/4 Scotch Brand Magic Tape
Plastic Wrap
DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer
J.W.Etc. Satin Varnish
Initial Prep:
Base and seal the paper mache box, in one step, using D/A Multi-Purpose Sealer
and Light French Blue. *Optional: For the bottom of the box, place
3/4'" Scotch Brand Magic Tape in vertical strips, around the entire box,
to create a striped effect. Then make a wash of Light Buttermilk and water,
crumple up a piece of plastic wrap, and stipple lightly over the strips. Remove
the tape strips, and shade on the L side of the stripe with Williamsburg Blue,
and the R side with Light Buttermilk. Then add stylus dots of Light Buttermilk,
down the stripes, approximately 1/2" apart.
Apply the pattern (click underlined words to see and print pattern) for the box top, omitting the vine, leaves and detail lines. Basecoat as follows:
CLOUDS: Light Buttermilk
ANGELS FACE/HANDS: Flesh Tone
OUTFIT: Taffy Cream
WINGS: Jade Green
BIRDHOUSE: Base the house in Mauve, the roof and hole are stroked on using
a #3 round and Soft Black.
Details, Shading and Highlighting: CLOUDS: Shade the bottoms of the clouds, and where they overlap, with Light French Blue. Deepen these shadings with Williamsburg Blue. Shade under and around the clouds with Williamsburg Blue, and deepen your shading UNDER the clouds, and wings with Deep Midnight Blue. Highlight the cloud tops with White, and then glaze (side-load your brush with a minute amount of paint...blend well) the clouds here and there, with Mauve.
ANGELS
FACE/HANDS: Shade the top of the face, and the hands where they come out of
the sleeves, with French Mocha. Highlight the bottom of the face and the hands
with Light Buttermilk. Apply the pattern for the features of the face, and
put them in with Soft Black, using a fine liner. The cheeks are drybrushed
on, using the 1/4" DM Stippler and a touch of Rookwood Red. Add highlight
dots in the eyes and cheeks with Light Buttermilk. The hair is stroked on
using a fine liner and Dark Chocolate. The halo is Soft Black, highlighted
with White. Softly outline face/hands where needed with Dark Chocolate.
OUTFIT: Apply the pattern lines, and then dot the outfit with Light Buttermilk. When dry, shade the outfit with Moon Yellow, on the bottom part of the sleeves...behind where the leg crosses over.. .the under part of the leg that is crossing over...and under the front flap. Deepen these shadings with Honey Brown. Highlight the outfit with Light Buttermilk, down the sleeves...the sides of the body...tops of the legs...and the front of the flap. The buttons are dots of Dark Chocolate. The heart is Mauve, shade the lower half of the heart with Rookwood Red, and add stitches of Soft Black. Line the outfit where needed with Dark Chocolate.
WINGS: Stripe the wings with Light Buttermilk, using a fine
liner. Highlight the wings with Light Buttermilk, on the top edge...and on
the outside edge. Shade with Evergreen,
behind the arms. Line softly along the outside edge with Soft Black, if desired.
BIRDHOUSE: Softly highlight the sides of the house, with Light Buttermilk. Shade the house, under the roof...and in front of the clouds, with Rookwood Red. Fine lines are Soft Black, as is the dot perch. Place a stroke of Light Buttermilk in the hole.
Finishing Details:
Either put the pattern on for the vine, or you can freehand...whatever you
are comfortable with. Using the #1 Script liner and inky Evergreen, paint
your vine. The leaves are Evergreen using a #4 filbert. Be sure to connect
your leaves onto your vine with this same green. The lettering is Soft Black
using #18/0 liner. I drybrushed the background with Light Buttermilk and the
DM Stippler #1/2. Load your dry brush with a small amount of paint, scrub
onto a dry paper towel and softly scrub highlights here and there, staying
out of your shadows. I checked the edge of the box with a #6 flat, and Light
Buttermilk. Lastly, I floated the outside edge with Light Buttermilk. The
brim of the box top I gave a wash of Williamsburg Blue, and floated Light
Buttermilk along the lower edge. When you have finished, let your paint cure
overnight, and then varnish with at least two coats of JW Etc Satin varnish.
