Supplies

9 3/4" Oval Box

Painting Supplies (water basin, palette paper, paper towels, etc.)

Basecoating Brush, 3/4" flat, Stylus, 1/2" Rake or Comb, Heather Redick 0/0 liner

J.W. etc. First Step
J.W. etc. Polyurethane Gloss Varnish

Prep:

Sand box lightly with fine sandpaper, then mop with a damp paper towel to remove dust.

Trace Pattern & Basecoat

  1. Basecoat bottom of box with Rhythm & Blue & J.W. etc. First Step (50/50)
  2. Either trace pattern on lid OR draw two ovals. I used the lids for the medium and small oval boxes from this set to trace on my ovals.
  3. Basecoat lid as follows:
  4. Basecoat outside flowers Pink Quartz (This looks best a bit uneven. Don't go for a uniform color all over the flower. Let it be thicker and thinner for lighter and darker colors on the flower.)
  5. Basecoat center flower with Rhythm & Blue + Seashell White mix (used for rim of box, described above) (This looks best a bit uneven. Don't go for a uniform color all over the flower. Let it be thicker and thinner for lighter and darker colors on the flower.)
  6. Basecoat Leaves Lt. Foliage Green

Details on the Top of the Box

  1. With the rake or comb brush thin Lt Foliage Green to a VERY THIN, inky consistency. When you think it is thin enough, add 30% more water! Flatten and splay your brush out and wiggle it so that there is very little paint left on the bristles. You should be able to walk your brush out on your palette and see the very fine lines. Use this brush only on the very tips apply a light pressure.
  2. See the photo right (click on it to see a larger version) for the pattern detail. Paint lines perpendicular to the inside oval with 1/2" of blank space between each set of lines.
  3. Using the Heather Redick 0/0 brush (or liner of your choice), loaded with VERY THIN Rhythm & Blue (when you think it is thin enough, add 30% more water!) paint. Paint a single line in the center of the yellow band following curve the outside of the box. I find that my liner works best when I keep my hand braced using my pinky finger. If you have trouble with your liner, watch to see if your hand is up in the air without any bracing!
  4. With a flat brush side-loaded with Straw, float color along the inside edge of the yellow band (against the blue edge) all around the box. If you can't keep the brush moving all around the box, start and stop your float in the center of the plaid lines. This will help hide the start and stop marks.
  5. With your 0/0 brush loaded with Pink Quartz, paint a thick line around the inside edge of the yellow band. If you can't keep the brush moving all around the box, start and stop your float in the center of the plaid lines. This will help hide the start and stop marks.
  6. Using straight Denim sideloaded on your flat brush, float color along the inside curve inside the inner white circle just around the leaves and flowers where they overlap the blue band.
  7. Using the end of your stylus, place small Pumpkin dots staggered around the blue band.
  8. Pink Flowers: sideload Fuchia on your flat brush and float color around the bottom edge of both flowers. (Look at the picture at top. The words on the box will show you which is the top and bottom.)
  9. Purple Flower: sideload Rhythm & Blue on your flat brush and float color along the bottom and left side of the flower.
  10. Leaves: sideload Med. Foliage Green on your flat brush and float color along any edge of the leaf where it is up against a flower. Float color on the bottom edge of the topmost leaf, the upper leaf that overlaps the blue band and the leaf that comes out to the right of the largest pin flower.
  11. With your 0/0 liner, paint in the curvy lines on the flowers. This is a cartoonish flower, so keep the edges curvy and loose. REMEMBER! Thin and inky and keep adding water!!! Line the pink flower with straight Fuchia, and the purple flower with Rhythm & Blue.
  12. Line the outside of the leaves and the inner vein line with Med. Foliage Green using your 0/0 liner.
  13. The word beloved is written in Rhythm & Blue using your 0/0 liner
  14. Using thinned Straw (or mix your Straw with a bit of Mello Yellow), float color around the flowers where they lay against the white background. This should be very soft and light. Be sure to get color in on the left side where the white peaks through.

Bottom of the Box

  1. Using the Rhythm & Blue plus Seashell White mix from the lid, paint a wavy border along the base of the box. There is no pattern for this. You want it to be loose and uneven. (See the picture at the top of the side of the box for a overall view of the side)
  2. Once this is dry, using the end of a brush paint larger sized dots staggered around the box using Mello Yellow.

Finishing Touches

Once the box is thoroughly dry (those dots may take a day or so to dry all the way through), finish with J.W. Etc. Polyurethane Gloss varnish.
